Susan G. Komen Foundation – “Close the Gap Rally”
First Quarter 2008
Californians for Patient Care participated, promoted and sponsored dinner for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and their seven California Affiliates at their “Close the Gap Rally on Thursday January 17, 2008. The event was well attended by many as an effort to raise awareness regarding the gaps in access to breast cancer screening in the state. Ricardo Chavira, from Desperate Housewives, kicked off the rally and march to the Crest Theatre. Thereafter, the Komen Foundation hosted the “State of Breast Health in California” symposium at the Sheraton, Sacramento.
Binational Health Week-Sacramento
Third Quarter 2007
Californians for Patient Care was one of more than 3,000 organizations in 31 states in the U.S. and 3 provinces in Canada, to contribute to the Binational Health Week in Sacramento. The event is sponsored by the 46 Mexican consulates, 11 Guatemalan consulates, 12 Salvadoran consulates, and 9 Colombian consulates and took place on October 13-21, 2007. This event is a week-long series of health-promotion and health-education activities for Latino immigrants. With the dedicated commitment of local, state, and national agencies, what originally began in 2001 as a grassroots initiative across seven California counties has since become one of the largest mobilization efforts in the Americas to provide health services and information for improving the well-being of underserved immigrants and migrants of Latin American origin.
The event kicked off with a two-day roster of inaugural events in Los Angeles, including the release of a major study on Latino immigrant health issues and a binational policy forum addressing migration and health topics, such as global health and migration, access to health services, and the health of vulnerable people, including those with disabilities and agricultural workers. More than 400 high-level representatives from federal, state and community organizations from participating countries took part, including elected officials, University of California administration/faculty/alumni/students, union leaders, researchers, and community organizations.
Throughout the week, thousands of Binational Health Week activities took place at the local level in communities all over California, the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Californians for Patient Care will continue to work collaboratively with the Mexican Consul General, Alejandra Bologna to bring more health care resources to next year’s event.
Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles
Second Quarter 2007
We are pleased to announce CPC’s first quarterly event for 2007 -- a partnering with Physicians for Social Responsibility-Los Angeles (PSR-LA) at its 2007 Gala Dinner. PSR-LA was founded in 1961 as a non-for-profit organization whose founding principle remains that physicians must work to “prevent what we cannot cure.”
In 1999 the PSR-LA Board of Directors unanimously voted to incorporate environmental justice considerations into its mission and continues to strive in support of medical concerns with activist resolve. PSR-LA wields a unique influence on public policy and stands as a respected and powerful voice for change.
Californians for Patient Care is pleased to affiliate with and sponsor PSR-LA at this community event that draws a respected audience in order to raise the CPC profile within the Los Angeles region and the health care based community.
