Take charge of your healthcare
You play an important role when it comes to managing your healthcare. There are four important ways you can actively participate in the process.
Communicate your needs, questions, concerns and health status effectively to those who provide your healthcare services. Remember, the relationship between you and your doctor is a partnership that begins with YOU.
Know your rights as well as your healthcare insurance benefits (what is covered and what is not covered). Remember, the healthcare system is complicated and it’s up to you to advocate for yourself and learn more.
Be proactive
- Know your health condition and take control of your illness.
- Carry a list of your current medications; know what they are for and know their side effects.
- Know what your diagnosis is and actively participate in your recommended treatment plan.
- Report any changes in your health status to your attending physician (even if those changes seem small).
- Actively seek out information about your medical condition, your treatment plan and the things you can do to stay healthy and prevent complications.
- Learn about community resources that can help you manage your condition (support groups, prescription assistance programs and disease- specific organizations or foundations).
- Make an Advanced Directive.
- Appoint a person to make decisions about your care, should you become unable to do this for yourself. Give a copy of your advanced directive to your doctor(s).
- Bring an advocate with you during hospitalizations or when you need to make important decisions about your care.
- When you have concerns about your care, know where to get answers and develop relationships with those who can help you.
Create a paper trail
- Ask for and maintain copies of your medical records.
- Keep copies of all correspondence and all your medical expense receipts.
- Take notes when having important conversations about your care.
- Maintain a schedule of regular doctor visits.
